German scientists have discovered a natural product that can suppress coronavirus infection up to 97%
Some juices can help the body fight coronavirus effectively, reveals a new study by a group of German scientists that analyzed the potential of plant-derived foods to inactivate SARS-CoV-2 and the flu virus.
A group of researchers, led by scientists from the Institute of Molecular Virology at the University of Ulm Medical Center, revealed that Aronia melanocarpa juice, pomegranate juice (Punica granatum) and green tea (Camellia sinensis) act against both viruses, suggesting that mouthwash with these fluids can reduce the viral load in the oral cavity and thus decrease the transmission of the virus.
In the course of the study, scientists found that black chokeberry(Aronia melanocarpa) juice can suppress SARS-CoV-2 virus up to 97%. The influenza virus was suppressed even more actively. Green tea and pomegranate juice have also shown effectiveness.
The scientists observed that Aronia melanocarpa juice was several times more efficient at inactivating viruses than other foods tested.
“We found that chokeberry juice (Aronia melanocarpa), pomegranate juice (Punica granatum) and green tea (Camellia sinensis) have virucidal activity against both viruses, suggesting that mouth rinsing can reduce viral load in the mouth, thus by reducing the transmission of the virus”
“A five-minute mouth wash with Aronia melanocarpa juice produced stronger antiviral activities and inactivated influenza A virus (IAV), SARS-CoV-2 and also AdV5 at 99.99%, 96.98% and 93 23%, respectively,” the researchers note.
SARS-CoV-2 was also reduced approximately 80% by pomegranate juice and green tea after just one minute of mouth wash.
Scientists recall that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted before symptoms appear, which is particularly treacherous. Therefore, the study authors recommend mouthwash and gargle with the juices and tea to prevent the spread of the virus during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Experts explained that these and other natural juices, as well as green tea, can weaken viruses due to an acidic environment and plant polyphenols by 80%.
“For example, elderflower syrup (Sambucus nigra) has shown the ability to relieve symptoms in patients with the flu,” the experts said.
